Life is meaningful if you can save life......

Life Advice about being a Blood Donor:

It isn't everyday you can do something to save someone's life.

Those who fit for blood donations are individuals between 18 to 60 years old who weigh at 110 pounds. Young people, in particular, are in demand.

Why you should give?

Giving blood doesn't just benefit recipients. Regardless of age, donating blood offers many benefits for donors. It lets you:

  • make a difference in your community by helping others.
  • develop a sense of commitment to and connection with your local community.
  • be assured that adequate supplies of blood are available for you, as well as your family and others.
  • free health screening to check your blood pressure, temperature, hemoglobin, and pulse rate every time you give.
  • reduced risk of heart disease: some doctors and scientists believe that giving blood may prevent heart disease. Although no conclusive evidence is available, numerous physicians have noted that blood donors typically have fewer cases of heart disease than non-donors. It is speculated that giving blood regularly reduces the amount of iron in the bloodstream. Iron is an important element and necessary for human life. Too much iron, however, may actually damage the heart and circulatory system. Reducing blood iron through regular blood donations is a healthy way to potentially lower your risk of heart disease.

Giving Blood

Blood donations takes about an hour and is relatively painless. Here's what to expect when you give blood

  • you'll be asked to complete a health questionaire. The purpose is to ensure that you're in good health, and that your blood donation won't jeopardize either your health or the potential recipient.
  • the staff will take your temperaure. this is to ensure that you do not have infection. a sign of an infection can be a raised temperature. such as infection could potentially be passed along to someone receiving your blood, so they want to be sure you're healthy.
  • you'll have your blood pressure taken.
  • if you pass the health screening process, a phlebotomist(technician train to take blood), nurse or someone else medically qualified will draw blood.

When you're done, you'll be asked to stay and relax, and have some refreshments to replenish fluids. within a few minutes you can return to school, work, and do most other activities. you can help speed your body's recovery by:

  • drinking extra fluids for the next 24 hours.
  • no smoking for one hour.
  • refraining from heavy muscular or strenuous activity, such as lifting or pushing heavy objects, for at least four hours.
